കടുത്ത ചൂടാണിപ്പോള്‍ കേരളത്തിലെങ്ങും, രണ്ടുമാസം വേനല്‍ക്കാലം നമുക്ക് മുന്നിലുണ്ട്. അതിഭീകരമായ ജലക്ഷാമമാണ് നമ്മളെ കാത്തിരിക്കുന്നത്. കാര്‍ഷിക വിളകളും മറ്റും പൊള്ളുന്ന ചൂടില്‍ ഉണങ്ങിവാടിക്കഴിഞ്ഞു. അടുക്കളത്തോട്ടത്തിലും ടെറസിലും വളര്‍ത്തുന്ന പച്ചക്കറികളെ കടുത്ത വേനലില്‍ നിന്നു സംരക്ഷിക്കാന്‍ ചില മാര്‍ഗങ്ങള്‍.
1. ഗ്രീന്‍ നെറ്റുകള്‍ കെട്ടുക. 50-60 % സൂര്യപ്രകാശം തടഞ്ഞു നിര്‍ത്തുന്ന ഗ്രീന്‍ നെറ്റുകള്‍ അടുക്കളത്തോട്ടത്തില്‍ വലിച്ചു കെട്ടുക. കഠിന വേനലില്‍ നിന്നു പച്ചക്കറികളെ സംരക്ഷിക്കും.
2. പുതയിടല്‍ വളരെ അത്യാവശ്യമാണ്. ഈ കാലാവസ്ഥയില്‍ ചെടികളുടെ തടത്തില്‍ കട്ടിയില്‍ പുതയിടുന്നതു വളരെ ഗുണംചെയ്യും. ഈര്‍പ്പം നില നിര്‍ത്താനുള്ള ഏറ്റവും നല്ല മാര്‍ഗമിതാണ്.
3. പച്ചക്കറികളുടെ ചുവട് കിളയ്ക്കുന്നത് ഒഴിവാക്കുക. ചൂടില്‍ വേരിനു ക്ഷതം വന്നാല്‍ തൈകള്‍ പെട്ടന്ന് ഉണങ്ങി പോകും.
4. ഗ്രോ ബാഗിലെ പച്ചക്കറികള്‍ക്ക് ചുറ്റും നിറയെ ഉണങ്ങിയ ഇലകളിട്ട് നനച്ചു കൊടുത്താല്‍ കൂടുതല്‍ സമയം ഈപ്പം നിലനില്‍ക്കും.
5. ഗ്രോ ബാഗുകള്‍ ടെറസിലാണങ്കില്‍ തീര്‍ച്ചയായും ചെങ്കല്ല്, കട്ട തുടങ്ങിയവയുടെ മുകളില്‍ വെക്കുക.
6. രാവിലെ ഒഴിവാക്കുന്ന കഞ്ഞിവെള്ളം പച്ചക്കറി തൈകള്‍ക്ക് ഒഴിച്ചു കൊടുക്കുക. ഈര്‍പ്പം നിലനിര്‍ത്താനും കീടങ്ങളെ അകറ്റാനുമിതു സഹായിക്കും. കൂടാതെ കഞ്ഞിവെള്ളം നല്ല ജൈവവളവുമാണ്.
7. നന കാര്യക്ഷമമാക്കുക, വേനല്‍ ശക്തി പ്രാപിച്ചതോടെ ചെടികളുടെ തടത്തിലെ ഈര്‍പ്പം വളരെ പെട്ടന്നു നഷ്ടപ്പെടുന്ന അവസ്ഥയാണ് ഇപ്പോള്‍. അതു കൊണ്ട് തന്നെ രാവിലെയും വൈകിട്ടും പച്ചക്കറികള്‍ക്കും മറ്റ് ചെടികള്‍ക്കും നനയ്ക്കാന്‍ ശ്രമിക്കുക.
