നിരവധി ഗുണങ്ങളുള്ള പച്ചക്കറിയാണ് ചിരങ്ങ. അല്പ്പം സ്ഥലമുണ്ടെങ്കില് തന്നെ വളര്ത്താവുന്ന ചിരങ്ങയെ ചുരയ്ക്ക എന്നും വിളിക്കുന്നു. എന്നാല് കേരളത്തില് ചിരങ്ങ കൃഷി ചെയ്യുന്നവരുടെ എണ്ണമിപ്പോള് വളരെ കുറവാണ്. പന്തലിട്ടും നിലത്ത് പടര്ത്തിയും ചിരങ്ങയെ വളര്ത്താം. ജനുവരി -മാര്ച്ച് മാസങ്ങളില് കൃഷി ചെയ്യുന്നതാണ് ഉചിതം.
നടീല് രീതി
വിത്ത് നേരിട്ട പാകിയാണ് കൃഷി തുടങ്ങേണ്ടത്. ഒരു സെന്റിന് 12 മുതല് 16 ഗ്രാം വരെ വിത്ത് വേണ്ടിവരും. പസാ സമ്മര് പ്രൊലിഫിക് ലോംഗ്, അര്ക്കാ ബാഹര് എന്നിവയാണ് കേരളത്തിലെ കാലാവസ്ഥയ്ക്ക് അനുയോജ്യമായ വിത്തിനങ്ങള്. 30 45 സെന്റിമീറ്റര് ആഴത്തിലും 60 സെന്റിമീറ്റര് വ്യാസത്തിലുമുള്ള കുഴികള് 3 മീറ്റര് അകലത്തില് പന്തലില് പടര്ത്താനുള്ള സൗകര്യാര്ത്ഥം ഒരുക്കേണ്ടതാണ്. തറയില് പടരുതിനായി കുഴികള് തമ്മില് 2 മീറ്റര് അകലവും വരികള് തമ്മില് 3-4 മീറ്റര് അകലവും പാലിക്കണം. കുഴികളില് കാലിവളവും മേല്മണ്ണും കൂട്ടി കലര്ത്തിയ മിശ്രിതം നിറക്കണം. കുഴി ഒന്നിന് 4 മുതല് 5 വിത്തുവരെ നടാവുന്നതാണ്.

പരിചരണം
രണ്ടാഴ്ചയ്ക്ക് ശേഷം ആരോഗ്യമില്ലാത്ത ചെടികളെ നീക്കം ചെയ്ത് കുറഞ്ഞത് 3 ചെടികള് ഒരു കുഴിയില് നിലനിര്ത്തണം. വളര്ച്ചയുടെ ആദ്യകാലഘട്ടങ്ങളില് 3 - 4 ദിവസത്തെ ഇടവേളകളില് നനക്കേണ്ടതാണ്. പൂവിടുമ്പോഴും കായ്ക്കുമ്പോഴും ഒന്നിടവിട്ട് ദിവസങ്ങളില് നനയ്ക്കണം. പൂര്ണ വലിപ്പം വച്ച കായ്കള് ഇളം പ്രായത്തില്തന്നെ വിളവെടുക്കണം. നഖംകൊണ്ട് കായില് കുത്തിയാല് താഴ്ന്നുപോകുന്നുവെങ്കില് അത് പച്ചക്കറിയായി ഉപയോഗിക്കാവുന്നതാണ്. പുറം തോടിനു കട്ടിവയ്ക്കുക മൂലം കുത്തുമ്പോള് നഖം കായിലേക്ക് ഇറങ്ങുന്നില്ലെങ്കില് പച്ചകറിക്ക് ഉപയോഗ്യമല്ല. വീട്ടാവശ്യത്തിന് അടുക്കളത്തോട്ടത്തില് വളര്ത്തുകയാണെങ്കില് പന്തലിട്ടു കൊടുക്കുന്നതാണ് ഉചിതം. രണ്ടോ മൂന്നോ തൈകള് വളര്ത്തിയാല് തന്നെ ഒരു കുടുംബത്തിനുള്ള വിളവ് ലഭിക്കും.
കീടങ്ങളും രോഗങ്ങളും
ധാരാളം ഇലകളുണ്ടായി പടര്ന്നു പോകുന്ന വിളയായതിനാല് കീടങ്ങളും രോഗങ്ങളും ചിരങ്ങയെ ആക്രമിക്കാനെത്തും. ഇല കരണ്ട് തിന്നുന്ന വണ്ടാണ് പ്രധാന ശത്രു. കരണ്ട് തിന്ന ഇലയുടെ ഭാഗം ഉണങ്ങിപ്പോകുമ്പോള് മാത്രമാണ് നാം വിവരമറിയുക. ഇതിനായി ദിവസവും വള്ളികളെ ശ്രദ്ധിച്ചു പരിപാലിക്കുക. കീടത്തിന്റെ എല്ലാദശയും ശേഖരിച്ചു നശിപ്പിക്കുക. 2% വേപ്പണ്ണ-സോപ്പ് -വെളുത്തുള്ളി ലായനി തളിച്ചാല് ഒരു പരിധിവരെ ഈ കീടങ്ങളെ തുരത്താം. ആക്രമണം രൂക്ഷമാണെങ്കില് രാസ കീടനാശിനികള് പ്രയോഗിക്കേണ്ടി വരും. ചുവന്ന മത്തന് വണ്ടാണ് മറ്റൊരു പ്രശ്നം. ഇലകളും വേരും നശിപ്പിക്കുന്ന ഈ ജീവി ഇലകളില് വിവിധ ആകൃതിയില് ദ്വാരങ്ങളുണ്ടാക്കും. വേപ്പിന്പിണ്ണാക്ക് തടത്തില് ചേര്ത്താല് ഒരു പരിധി വരെ ഇവയെ ഓടിക്കാം. ഒരു കുഴിക്ക് 20 ഗ്രാം എന്ന തരത്തില് ചേര്ക്കണം. പുകയിലകഷായം ഇലയുടെ അടിവശം നനയുന്ന രീതിയില് തളിക്കുന്നതും ഫലം ചെയ്യും. ഇല മഞ്ഞളിപ്പാണ് ചിരങ്ങളെ ബാധിക്കുന്ന പ്രധാന രോഗം. ഇലപരപ്പില് മഞ്ഞപ്പാടുകള്, അടിവശത്ത് അഴുകിയ പോലുള്ള നനഞ്ഞ പാടുകള് എന്നിവയാണ് ലക്ഷണം. വേപ്പ്,നാറ്റപൂച്ചെടി എന്നിവയില് ഏതെങ്കിലും ഒന്നിന്റെ ചാരം 5% വീര്യത്തില് ഇലകളുടെ ഇരു വശവും നനയുന രീതിയില് തളി്ക്കുക.മാങ്കോസബ് 0.3% (3 ഗ്രാം /ഒരു ലിറ്റര് വെള്ളത്തില് ) തളി്ക്കുക.
ഗുണങ്ങള്
മറ്റു പച്ചക്കറികളുടെ പ്രാധാന്യമൊന്നും ആരും ചിരങ്ങയ്ക്ക് കൊടുക്കാറില്ല. എന്നാല് നിരവധി ഗുണങ്ങളാണ് ഇതിനുള്ളത്. ഹൃദയാരോഗ്യം മെച്ചപ്പെടുത്താന് ചിരങ്ങ കഴിക്കുന്നത് സഹായിക്കും. ശരീര ഭാരം കുറയ്ക്കാനും ഉറക്കം സംബന്ധിച്ച പ്രശ്നങ്ങള് ഇല്ലാതാക്കാനും ചിരങ്ങ കഴിക്കുന്നതു നല്ലതാണ്. പതിവായി ചിരങ്ങ ജ്യൂസ് കുടിക്കുന്നത് അകാലനര ചെറുക്കുമെന്നും പറയപ്പെടുന്നു.
